NAWAB SIR SALIMULLAH
The
contributions of Nawab Sir Salimullah to the Renaissance of Muslims of India
cannot be underestimated. He fervently supported the Partition of Bengal to
safeguard the interests of local Muslims. He found that Bengal was under the
influence of the “Calcullta Hindus”. All the Government posts from top to
bottom were monopolized by the Hindus. So he suggested the partition of Bengal
and the formation of a separate province of east Bengal comprising Eastern
districts of Bengal and Assam. Lord Curzon took up the suggestion and
partitioned Bengal. The annulment of the partition was bitterly resented by
Salimullah. In the Coronation Durbar at Delhi (1911), he protested against this
treachery of the British Government. It was mainly to console and pacify him that
the Dacca University was establish.
It
was Salimullah who played the greatest part in bringing the Muslim League into
existence. In December 1906, he convened a session of the Muslim Education
Conference at Dacca. In that conference he proposed the formation of All India
Muslim League. He was one of the organizers of the famous Simla Deputation of
1906 who met the Viceroy. The Deputation aimed at urging the Viceroy to
introduce separate electorate in India so that the different communities could
send their representative to the Government.
Salimullah
devoted all his time, energy and wealth to the task of raising the political
and intellectual standards of the Muslims.
